Okay.

  1. Juliet is indeed 13, but is turning 14 in two weeks. And in the time period, that is a very regular time to get married. I get so angry when people say it’s ridiculous for her to be getting married. People younger than her at the time already had children!
  2. It never actually says how old Romeo is. He’s probably around 15. And if even if he were 17, the age difference really doesn’t matter that much. Juliet would probably marry someone significantly older than her, anyway. It’s never said how old Paris is, but I’m thinking 20s or early 30s.
  3. This play is about love not about falling in love. The fact that they fell in love so fast is DELIBERATE. Shakespeare wanted to show how their love changed them, and how it affected everyone around them. THE POINT is that love is a powerful thing.
  4. Can I mention again: DIFFERENT TIME PERIOD. Things work DIFFERENTLY. Juliet would’ve been forced to marry someone she didn’t know. Here she meets someone she is immediately attracted to, immediately has feelings for. It takes her by storm. He’s forbidden and exciting and she loves him.
  5. If none of the above means anything to you, the point of all Shakespeare plays, in the very long run is not the plot. The plot really doesn’t matter. Shakespeare didn’t even come up with the plot for Romeo and Juliet. The point is the WORDS. Of course it’s a fucking love story. Have YOU fucking read it? Their love changes both of them. It makes Juliet stronger, willing to become her own person and realize that she is a person to be loved, not just a tool for her parents to use. And Romeo by having requited love learns how to become a stronger person. Do they make mistakes? Of fucking course. Did it go too fast and was it ridiculous? Of course. Does that mean they weren’t in love? No! I’m tired of people saying that teenagers can’t have real emotions because they’re teenagers.
  6. oh my GOD. OH MY GOD. ALL OF THE PEOPLE DYING IS THE POINT THE POINT THE POINT. That love is powerful, and a thing to fight for. That this love convinces people who love each other to reconcile. It ends in tragedy yes, but OH MY GOD DID YOU EVEN READ IT
  7. fuck you
